After noticing something different on her breast, Val, a 33-year-old fitness instructor was advised to get a mammogram and was diagnosed with breast cancer. Genetic testing revealed a PALB2 mutation, leading to an aggressive treatment plan that included chemotherapy, radiation, a double mastectomy, and ongoing hormone therapy. Today, Val is cancer-free, and back to living her life with her husband and two young sons, while advocating for and supporting women facing similar diagnoses.

When Michael Kender, 59, signed up for a free prostate cancer screening as part of an annual event hosted by NewYork-Presbyterian, the New York Mets, and Fans for the Cure, he never imagined it would lead to a diagnosis. But the next day, he learned the blood test showed his PSA levels were elevated, and following an MRI and biopsy, he was diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer. After a successful surgery with urologist Dr. David Green, Michael is now cancer-free and encouraging other men to get screened.

At 34, Karen Richiez was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. A follow-up evaluation at NewYork-Presbyterian revealed an aggressive form of lung cancer, but after a partial lung resection by cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Jonathan Villena-Vargas, she is now free of disease and focused on her health and spending time with her daughter.

Teri Murray, 46, believed she was in perfect health until a routine colonoscopy revealed she had stage 4 colon cancer that had spread to her liver. After a countrywide search for the right care team, Teri chose NewYork-Presbyterian, where her surgeons planned a minimally invasive procedure to remove part of her liver and colon, allowing her to recover faster and resume chemotherapy treatment sooner. Now cancer-free with an excellent prognosis, Teri is focused on encouraging others to stay up to date on screenings.

Danielle, wife and new mom, was diagnosed with HER2-negative breast cancer at the age of 34 after giving birth to her first child. Danielle’s team of doctors at NewYork-Presbyterian quickly devised a care plan, prioritizing preserving her fertility to be able to continue growing her young family, before she began chemotherapy. Today, she is cancer-free and recently welcomed her second child because of the comprehensive care our team was able to provide.
